About IFAT /Areas of work – Our work is centered around three areas of work:

  • Market Development (Developing the market for Fair Trade)
  • Fair Trade Monitoring (Building trust in Fair Trade)
  • Advocacy (Speaking out for Fair Trade)

We do this by … :

  • Linking members of the network: Membership of IFAT gives Fair Trade Organizations the opportunity to forge relationships, especially through its international and regional conferences. The biennial international conferences are the most important gatherings of IFAT; they are its general assembly. Decisions taken at these conferences set the direction for its work for the next two years. The first conference took place in 1991 in Kilkenny, Ireland, opened by then President of Ireland, Mary Robinson (now UN Commissioner for Human Rights). IFAT’s regional conferences take place in the alternate (even-numbered) years between the biennial conferences. They serve to facilitate communication between members within each region, develop regional markets, promote Fair Trade, discuss regional issues and concerns, provide opportunities for learning and to bring new members into IFAT.
  • Keeping the network informed: We communicate regularly with our members, collecting and disseminating relevant information. Twice monthly electronic updates are produced by the Secretariat to keep members informed of IFAT’s activities and to channel enquiries and commercial opportunities.
