  • The Arias Foundation for Peace and Human Progress is a non-governmental, not-for-profit organization based in San Jose, Costa Rica. It was created in 1988 with the financial support of the Nobel Peace Prize, awarded to its founder and then-President of Costa Rica, Dr. Oscar Arias Sánchez, in recognition of his efforts to achieve a “firm and lasting peace” in Central America.

About 2/2: … As a result of these efforts, the Arias Foundation has carried out more than 200 projects and programs, as well as participating in numerous national and international forums publishing more than 300 documents.

In recognition of its work, the United Nations Economic and Social Council granted the Arias Foundation Special Consultative Status as a civil society organization in 2003, and with this same status the Foundation continues to participate in the Organization of American States (OAS).

  • The Arias Foundation is one of the most important non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in post-war Central America and has provided integral support for reconstruction processes throughout the region.
  • The Arias Foundation’s demilitarization program contributed to the constitutional abolition of the militaries in Panama and Haiti.
  • Through the Central American Dialogue and Disarmament Program, the Arias Foundation analyzes the problem of growing social violence and promotes effective intervention and violence-prevention strategies in communities and schools, as well as police training and disarmament.
  • The Arias Foundation is a pioneering institution in its promotion of political participation, entrepreneurship capacities, and land and property rights for Central American women.

  • The Arms Trade Treaty (ATT), an initiative led by our founder, Dr. Oscar Arias Sánchez, counts on the support of more than 150 countries, 20 Nobel Peace Prize winners and the backing of hundreds of civil society organizations all over the world.
  • The “Arms, No Thanks” Campaign for teens and adolescents and the “Safe School, Safe Community” program focus on the prevention of violence in Central American societies.
