Yorkshire Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament

Campaign: … /Menwith Hill, near Harrogate North Yorkshire/UK, is run by the US National Security Agency (NSA), operates outside US law and is not accountable in British law. It is part of a global network of bases used to spy on all forms of international telecommunications – including private phone calls, emails and faxes – and is crucial for the intelligence-gathering necessary for any US-led military attack.  In 2007, one day before Parliamentary Summer recess Prime Minister Gordon Brown announced that Menwith Hill would be included in the US Missile Defence system with no democratic debate, consultation or accountability. Campaign 2/2: No to U.S. Missile Defence: US Missile Defence is part of US’ strategy for full military domination of land, air, sea, space and information. The US describes it as a defensive system as it allows the US to shoot down incoming missiles.

In reality it will enable the US to attack other countries without fear of retaliation. It formed a major part of the “Star Wars” proposal suggested by President Reagan and has also sparked controversy under the Presidency of George W Bush by provoking a new arms race with an increased likelihood of nuclear weapons use. Iran’s long range missiles as well as North Korea’s ambitions have been cited as the reason for US Missile Defence. There are two components in the UK at Fylingdales and Menwith Hill both in North Yorkshire … (full text).

Fylingdales:

  • Visitors to the picturesque and remote Snod Hill in North Yorkshire are often surprised at the giant truncated pyramid that marks the whereabouts of the Ballistic Missile Early Warning System (BMEWS) radar at “RAF” Fylingdales.
  • One thing that may not be so obvious is that this system is probably the most significant strategic installation in Yorkshire and is of direct relevance to plans for the United States’ Ballistic Missile Defence system. Find out more about Fylingdales, the threat it poses to Yorkshire and the UK, its key role in aggresive foreign policy, and the campaign against it … (full text).

Trident:

  • Trident is the UK’s nuclear weapons system and is based at Faslane, near Glasgow in Scotland. There are four Trident submarines. Each submarine can carry up to 48 nuclear warheads, each eight times as powerful as the bomb dropped on Hiroshima in 1945 killing an estimated 140,000 people.
  • One Trident warhead aimed at a city could kill over a million people as well as causing severe injuries to countless others, destroying almost the entire infrastructure and radioactively contaminating the whole area and beyond for decades to come.
  • If all the warheads from one submarine were fired at once, it could wipe out a population around the size of the UK. Britain has been nuclear armed since 1952, buying into the US nuclear weapons system Polaris from 1968 to 1996 and Trident from 1994 … (full text).

Space for Peace:

  • Keep Space for Peace: Although space is used for military purposes, there are no weapons in space.  Deploying space weapons would have seriously destabilising effects on international relations and disarmament efforts.  It is for this reason that a number of countries openly oppose space weapons including Russia, Canada, China and some European states.  However, some states, in particular the US, see space weapons as the future of dominance, control and successful war-fighting and are researching and developing space weapons … (full text).
