TERRE DES FEMMES supports several self-help projects by women for women through media activities and fundraising. Examples of such projects are a women’s shelter in Algiers (Algeria), an alphabetisation project for women in Shahrak (Afghanistan) and three projects fighting for the abolition of female genital mutilation in Burkina Faso, Tanzania and Kenya. You will find a more detailed description of these three projects below.

About: The association currently has almost 2900 members (as of July 2005) and there are many women participating on an honorary basis in city groups throughout Germany. Together with the national headquarters, the groups organise events and set up information booths, communicate with the media and lobby decision-makers, hold presentations and collect signatures to inform the public about the exploitation, abuse and persecution of women.

Our organisation chart (pdf format, 10KB) helps to explain the structure of the association.

TERRE DES FEMMES maintains an archive that is open for public use. Our aim is to make this archive a central location for documenting human rights abuses committed against women.

The national headquarter (Bundesgeschäftsstelle) was established in Tuebingen in 1990. We have expanded and professionalised the association’s activities and improved the coordination between our different activities by creating full-time positions. If you’d like to know more about our history, feel free to browse the comprehensive chronology (German only) describing our development since the association was founded in 1981.

From the beginning, working together with women and women’s groups worldwide has been an important area of work. Project cooperation is an essential part of the association’s activities.
