Editorial of July, 2008: The relationship between ritualism and values is inversely proportional. The more one sees a society engrossed in rituals, putting on the garb of holiness and sanctity, the less respectful it becomes of the values. It grows more concerned with image than character. Rituals often have the tendency of raising a faade, putting on a mask, covering up the real face and robbing the individual or the society off the substance. People of faith, be they Muslims, Christians, Hindus or others, often camouflage their action under ritualism to put on a cloak of sacredness … (full text).

WHY KEEP LOOKING BACK AT THE PAST? The team that created this web page was motivated by a concern for the word “memory.” In the years that have gone by since Chile began its “transition” to democracy, there has been a constant call for people to forget. The effort to erase the memory of a very specific part of the country’s history comes most especially from one sector of the society. Still, as made evident by regular, every-day events, the contradictions from the past continue to have their effect today.

There are two organisations with almost the same name:
1): The SDS 1960 organization: see on wikipedia:
Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) was, historically, a student activist movement in the United States that was one of the main iconic representations of the country’s New Left. The organization developed and expanded rapidly in the mid-1960s before dissolving at its last convention in 1969. SDS was the organizational high point for student radicalism in the United States and has been an important influence on student organizing in the decades since its collapse. Participatory democracy, direct action, radicalism, student power, shoestring budgets, and its organizational structure are all present in varying degrees in current national student activist groups. Though various organizations have been formed in subsequent years as proposed national networks for left-wing student organizing, none has approached the scale of SDS, and most have lasted a few years at best … (full text on wikipedia/1960 organisation).

The American Freedom Agenda’s (AFA) mission is twofold: the enactment of a cluster of statutes that would restore the Constitution’s checks and balances as enshrined by the Founding Fathers; and, making the subject a staple of political campaigns and of foremost concern to Members of Congress and to voters and educators. Especially since 9/11, the executive branch has chronically usurped legislative or judicial power, and has repeatedly claimed that the President is the law. The constitutional grievances against the White House are chilling, reminiscent of the kingly abuses that provoked the Declaration of Independence.

Be it resolved that psychologists may not work in settings where persons are held outside of, or in violation of, either International Law (e.g., the UN Convention Against Torture and the Geneva Conventions) or the US Constitution (where appropriate), unless they are working directly for the persons being detained or for an independent third party working to protect human rights. About: We commend the American Psychological Association for having recently amended its 2007 Resolution Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment and its Application to Individuals Defined in the United States Code as “Enemy Combatants” (Amendment) so as to unequivocally condemn all techniques considered to be torture, thereby closing loopholes that existed in the original Resolution (see below). However, the International Committee of the Red Cross determined in 2003 that the conditions in such Centers are themselves tantamount to torture. Yet psychologists maintain a presence in such sites and in 2007 the elected and appointed leaders of the APA voted once again against an amendment that would have prevented psychologists from working in facilities in which detainees are deprived of their human rights except as health personnel.

Some 250 million people around the world were born untouchable. They live throughout South Asia, as well as in Japan and parts of West Africa. Over 160 million of them are in India, where they make up more than one-sixth of the population, and where over 580 million more people belong to other oppressed castes and tribes.
The purpose of this site is to share our ideas and research. Our perspective is Marxist. It will take a socialist revolution to create the material basis for abolishing the caste system. And only a party that openly fights against caste oppression can lead the workers of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka to power.
We are not that party, or any kind of organization.

waging politics online
Linked with Matt Stoller - USA, with videos concerning the US, and with Finding Your Obviousmeter.
Blogpac funds progressive leadership and experiments with injecting new voices in the political process using internet activism. We give grants, no strings attached, to activists on the internet who have a demonstrated record of success in either creating progressive change or creating the space for progressives to make change. We also seek moments to inject progressive power into the political system through focused internet and new media activism, (about 1/2).
Blogpac grants money to two sets of emerging leaders.
- 1) Activists who have created change outside of a traditional party or campaign structure.
- 2) Local bloggers that build community spaces for activists in their state.

About: … The establishment of a Centre for Developmental Practice indicates an intention to share the work of CDRA more widely, to attempt to disseminate and promote its approach to the benefit of a wider group of people – both practitioners and organisations. By forming ourselves into a Centre for Developmental Practice we are bringing to the sector a resource to help practitioners and organisations develop their practice, nurturing in them a developmental, and therefore transformational, way of understanding the world and intervening in it.

From a small dance academy that was founded over five decades ago, today Darpana is a workshop for the arts where tradition meets technology to break down boundaries of art and life and where performers from the world over work together to open mindscapes through the arts. Established by Mrinalini and Vikram Sarabhai in 1949, for the last two decades the academy has been directed by their daughter Mallika Sarabhai. Today it has a permanent staff of over 60 people and several hundred others on projects. Its departments range from performance and teaching of the arts to their use as development communication through face to face impacting and software production. Its audiences range from arts lovers to district and supreme court judges, the less privileged across the world, children, women, tribal populations and more. With over 25000 graduates, nearly 10000 performances, audiences in 90 countries and a vibrant arts environment, Darpana today is a centre for artists committed to excellence, innovation and the excitement of using the arts for change. Darpana’s vision is a contemporary symbiosis affirming the role of creativity in culture, researching into our origins and reaching out to the unsaid or unthought of, with a language that is universal. Questions the press should ask
Linked with Alberto J. Mora - USA, with Ten lessons from recent torture hearings, and with Cruelty as a weapon of war.
Great questions are a key to great journalism. But often, in the press of deadlines, the flood of raw information, manipulated news, deliberate misinformation and just plain junk, great questions are hard to develop. Reporters and editors need to know what’s happening, why it happened, who’s involved, who’s affected and what happens next … (About 1/2).

The SSRC builds interdisciplinary intellectual networks to address global changes. We bring varied perspectives to bear on crucial issues and mobilize inclusive and informed publics based in multiple geographical locations. In this way, these activities promote international collaboration. International collaboration operates as a “strategic emphasis” that crosscuts, and integrates with, Council-wide programmatic areas, projects and activities, while also moving the Council’s regional programs into a new generation of research and scholarship. This is achieved through:
- organizing collaborative research on regional, cross-regional and global issues;
- facilitating and evaluating cooperation amongst institutions, centers and social science donors to enable international collaboration;
- developing training and exchange activities that promote research collaboration.
