Students for a Democratic Society SDS

Comments Off

Linked with Michael Albert – USA.

There are two organisations with almost the same name:

1): The SDS 1960 organization: see on wikipedia:

Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) was, historically, a student activist movement in the United States that was one of the main iconic representations of the country’s New Left. The organization developed and expanded rapidly in the mid-1960s before dissolving at its last convention in 1969. SDS was the organizational high point for student radicalism in the United States and has been an important influence on student organizing in the decades since its collapse. Participatory democracy, direct action, radicalism, student power, shoestring budgets, and its organizational structure are all present in varying degrees in current national student activist groups. Though various organizations have been formed in subsequent years as proposed national networks for left-wing student organizing, none has approached the scale of SDS, and most have lasted a few years at best … (full text on wikipedia/1960 organisation).

See also on wikipedia: SDS’ main page, and also the wiki’s 2006, The New SDS: Beginning January 2006, there is a movement to start a new SDS. A small group of old SDS members joined with a Connecticut high school student to call for a new SDS fighting for civil rights and against war. Several chapters at various colleges were later started. On Martin Luther King Day of 2006, these chapters called for the first national convention since 1969 to be held in the summer of 2006.

The American Freedom Agenda AFA

Comments Off

Linked with Bruce Fein – USA.

The American Freedom Agenda’s (AFA) mission is twofold: the enactment of a cluster of statutes that would restore the Constitution’s checks and balances as enshrined by the Founding Fathers; and, making the subject a staple of political campaigns and of foremost concern to Members of Congress and to voters and educators.  Especially since 9/11, the executive branch has chronically usurped legislative or judicial power, and has repeatedly claimed that the President is the law. The constitutional grievances against the White House are chilling, reminiscent of the kingly abuses that provoked the Declaration of Independence.
(full text, Homepage).

Address: 910 17th St., NW, Suite 800, Washington, DC 20006;

About: … The 10-point AFA statutory agenda would repeal the Military Commissions Act’s authorization of military commissions for the trial of alleged war criminals based on coerced or secret evidence. The trials should proceed in civilian courts or by courts-martial which feature time-honored procedural safeguards to insure reliable verdicts.

(APA = American Psychological Association)

Be it resolved that psychologists may not work in settings where persons are held outside of, or in violation of, either International Law (e.g., the UN Convention Against Torture and the Geneva Conventions) or the US Constitution (where appropriate), unless they are working directly for the persons being detained or for an independent third party working to protect human rights. About: We commend the American Psychological Association for having recently amended its 2007 Resolution Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment and its Application to Individuals Defined in the United States Code as “Enemy Combatants” (Amendment)  so as to unequivocally condemn all techniques considered to be torture,  thereby closing loopholes that existed in the original Resolution (see below). However, the International Committee of the Red Cross determined in 2003 that the conditions in such Centers are themselves tantamount to torture. Yet psychologists maintain a presence in such sites and in 2007 the elected and appointed leaders of the APA voted once again against an amendment that would have prevented psychologists from working in facilities in which detainees are deprived of their human rights except as health personnel.

About (Homepage 2/2):
Some 250 million people around the world were born untouchable. They live throughout South Asia, as well as in Japan and parts of West Africa. Over 160 million of them are in India, where they make up more than one-sixth of the population, and where over 580 million more people belong to other oppressed castes and tribes.

The purpose of this site is to share our ideas and research. Our perspective is Marxist. It will take a socialist revolution to create the material basis for abolishing the caste system. And only a party that openly fights against caste oppression can lead the workers of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka to power.

We are not that party, or any kind of organization.

About: Women’s Earth Alliance unites women environmental advocates around the world, providing the connections, resources and training they need to foster a thriving planet.

Our Vision: We envision a world in which women environmental leaders around the globe are in continual communication—cultivating partnerships, exchanging best practices, defining shared agendas, and collectively enacting a global shift towards environmental and social justice. We foresee a world in which women, with expanded access to both communication tools and decision-making processes regarding natural resource management, can powerfully participate in the development of global sustainability—thereby reducing poverty, encouraging democracy, promoting peace, and enhancing the social and environmental health of the planet.

Mission Statement: The purpose of the Restoration Advisory Board (RAB) is to promote awareness and obtain constructive community review and comment on environmental clean-up and restoration actions of the Installation Restoration (IR) Program underway at the Naval Station Newport (NAVSTA). The RAB will serve as a key mechanism to disseminate information about the IR Program and to ensure that various concerns about environmental restoration from the diverse interests within the community are heard. The RAB acts as a forum to discuss, exchange, and disseminate information regarding cleanup between NAVSTA, regulatory agencies, and the community, and it acts to foster partnership among the community and government. It provides an opportunity for the public to participate in the NAVSTA cleanup process and to provide input to decision makers. All RAB meetings will be open to the public. NAVSTA has developed a Community Relations Plan that outlines the community involvement program. The RAB supplements the community involvement effort. This Mission Statement and Operating Procedures will be included in the next update of the Community Relations Plan, which is available at the public information repositories located at the Newport Public Library, the Middletown Free Library, and the Portsmouth Free Public Library Association.

About: Investigative reporting is to journalism what theoretical research is to science, having the potential to present new realities and shatter old paradigms – how people see and understand the world around them – which, in turn, can transform politics.

That is why investigative journalism is so important to the health of a democracy. A dramatic set of new facts – as in Watergate or Iran-Contra – can overcome long-maintained lies and shake a corrupt government to its foundation.
