… Friends, Once a year War Times/Tiempo de Guerras asks for financial support. As an all-volunteer, online project, we operate on a shoestring budget. But we still need a few thousand dollars a year to pay for our website, e-mail service, postage and other bottom-line expenses. To raise money for War Times this year, one of our staffers is again running a “Marathon for Peace.” (See below for his message about the race.) So you can help War Times build a long haul peace movement and Max run his long haul 26.2 miles at the same time. No donation is too small or too large. We who believe in freedom cannot rest — Ella Baker

Linked with the Bay Area Veterans of the Civil Rights Movement.

… Those who were tactically nonviolent used Nonviolent Resistance as a tool for building political power, – in demonstrations, as an organizing technique and style, and as a political strategy to achieve specific goals. But it was a tactic, not a philosophy of life; and in other situations, – both personal and political, – other strategies and tactics might be used. We who were tactically nonviolent used Nonviolent Resistance because we wanted to win. We saw nonviolence as the most effective way to accomplish our goals through political means. We did not love our enemies, nor did we believe that our redemptive suffering would win over racists and segregationists to a new world of inter-racial brotherly love. By 1963 the great majority of Freedom Movement activists in CORE, SNCC, NAACP, and even SCLC, were tactically nonviolent rather than philosophically nonviolent … (excerpt from Two Kinds of Nonviolent Resistance, by Bruce Hartford, 2004).

The International Centre for Ethnic Studies ICES

A Social Science and Policy Research Institute

The International Centre for Ethnic Studies (ICES) is a world leader in the study of violent group conflict. Established in September 1982, the Centre was a pioneer in the field of conflict studies and research when the subject of conflict was not the fashionable subject for academic research and teaching that it is today. The work it has done covers South Asia and many other parts of the world which is also unusual for a think tank located in a small developing country. However, ICES also soon concluded that the study of violent group conflict needs to be studied and understood in its broader socio-economic, political context and global context. Thus the focus of the ICES soon widened to encompass a much broader research and publication agenda that extended to, among other things, sustainable development, governance and gender. The ICES vision is animated by six themes: … (full text Profile).

a simple one page site – but full of friendship (photo)

Added Nov. 20, 2008: Linked with Civil Rights Movement Veterans.

We are an organization of former civil rights workers who were active in the Southern Freedom Movement of the 1960s. We were staff and volunteers for CORE, SCLC, SNCC, NAACP and other organizations. In the years since, we’ve all gone our various ways but regardless of where we are now we consider the Movement to be one of the defining experiences of our lives.

The bonds we forged in danger, struggle, defeat, and victory neither rusted, nor withered with age. In our hearts we still stand in that Band of sisters and brothers in a circle of trust. Those of us who served in the Southern Freedom Movement and associated northern support centers are in a very real sense veterans of America’s second civil war. And like veterans of other wars, we wonder where our old friends have wandered and how they have fared. And also like veterans of other wars, some of us suffer from forms of post-traumatic stress syndrome and others of our brothers and sisters have fallen on hard times.

We don’t have a Veterans Administration — but we still have each other … (full text Homepage).

About: Have you ever marveled at the apparent ease with which a world-class musician, dancer, or athlete performs at a level beyond what most of us can attain? The things they do can seem almost magical.

Of course, we know that what looks so easy is a result of a deep commitment to excellence, demonstrated through in-depth study of their craft, in self-awareness and self-discipline, and in skills well honed by practice.

CounterPunch is the bi-weekly muckraking newsletter edited by Alexander Cockburn and Jeffrey St. Clair. Twice a month we bring our readers the stories that the corporate press never prints. We aren’t side-line journalists here at CounterPunch. Ours is muckraking with a radical attitude and nothing makes us happier than when CounterPunch readers write in to say how useful they’ve found our newsletter in their battles against the war machine, big business and the rapers of nature … (about 1/2).

About 2/2: … We’re in our sixth year now and have exceptionally loyal readers, who have delighted in our irreverent and biting approach. Time and again they tell us they’re sick of dull, predictable writing. They want fresh facts, a newsletter that they can enjoy rather than just endure–and we give it to them. Barbara Ehrenreich says, “CounterPunch makes me think. It makes me laugh. Above all it tells me things I didn’t know.”

Here at CounterPunch we have many friends and all the right enemies. And, guaranteed, you’ll never see any of us on the pundit line up at MSNBC. We try to stay beyond the pale. (Alexander Cockburn and Jeffrey St. Clair, Editors).

We, the Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart, are dedicated to contemplating and incarnating Gospel values. What is a Grey Nun: Our overriding concern is that the Gospel be proclaimed to all we serve, especially the poor and needy of our world. We have a preferential love for the materially poor and demonstrate it in our lives and works by living more simply. . . working with the poor, sharing our love and abilities, and being enriched by their gifts. . . educating ourselves and others to the responsibility in justice to satisfy the needs of the poor…and acting upon unjust societal conditions.

Boarding School Healing Project

Linked with Andrea Smith – USA, with American Indian Boarding School Experiences: Recent Studies from Native Perspectives, and with INDIGENOUS PEOPLES AND BOARDING SCHOOLS.

During the 19th and 20th centuries, American Indian and Alaska Native children were forcibly abducted from their homes to attend Christian boarding schools as a matter of government policy. Sexual, physical, and emotional violence was rampant in many of these schools. As a result of boarding school policies, there is now an epidemic of child sexual abuse in many Native communities. However, because of the shame attached to the abuse, there has been no forum to adequately address this problem. Consequently, child abuse passes from one generation to the next. This project is a starting point to address child sexual abuse. By framing abuse as the continuing effects of human rights abuses perpetrated by government policy, we hope to take the shame away from talking about the abuse and provide space for communities to address the problem and heal … (Homepage 1/2).
