The Marxists Internet Archive MIA is an all volunteer, non-profit public library, started 17 years ago in 1990. In 2006, MIA averaged 1.1 million visitors per month, downloading 15.5 million files per month. This represents a 25% increase in visitors since 2005, and a 380% increase in visitors since 2000. In 2007, MIA has 62 active volunteers from 33 different countries. MIA contains the writings of 592 authors representing a complete spectrum of political, philosophical, and scientific thought, generally spanning the past 200 years. MIA contains these writings in 45 different languages, comprising a total size of over 53,000 documents and 29 GB of data, all created through the work of volunteers around the world … (full long Introduction text).

Though this is hard for non-economists to believe, economists have it schooled into them that “money doesn’t matter” –that it is just a “veil over barter”, there to make it easier to swap commodities than it would be if you actually had to find someone who had what you wanted, and wanted to sell what you wanted to buy … (about 1/2).

The civil society conference will be hosted at the Centre International de Conférences Genève, adjacent to the Palais des Nations UN compound. The ‘Global Feminisms Project’ is a collaborative international project that examines the history of feminist activism, women’s movements and academic women’s studies in China, India, Poland, and the United States. We are examining the histories of feminism in local contexts by collecting ten videotaped oral histories of women’s movement activists and women’s studies scholars in each country. The Project is based in the Institute for Research on Women and Gender (IRWG) at UM, which is also the home for the US site research team. (On Homepage).

IASSCS was formed in July 1997 in Amsterdam, following a successful conference, “Beyond Boundaries: Sexuality Across Cultures”, jointly hosted by the Universities of Amsterdam and Chicago. This gathering was broadly concerned with the social and cultural study of sexuality, and drew together scholars from the disciplines of anthropology, history, sociology, health policy and cultural and gender studies. It was noted in the Amsterdam meeting that no organization existed which provided a forum for the interdisciplinary and cross-cultural studies of sexuality. The impetus behind the creation of IASSCS was the perceived need to address the fragmentation of studies in sexuality and to provide a forum for expanding and developing sexuality as a legitimate area of scholarships … (about 1/2).
